Find Out How to Fix Mental Health Aversion in Rural America

The main reason for the dismissal of mental health care in rural America is the lack of therapists/counselors in rural areas.

Some folks in the countryside need to travel miles to get to the clinic on rusty roads and wacky paths. To a lot of them, getting there is a job on its own and the brush off? It is understandable considering the circumstances. Still, that is by no means an excuse, but the citizens are not to be blamed.

That was the case for Haley DelPlato when she came home to Long Valley, NJ, from college during winter break in 2012. She was suffering from an array of mental dilemmas like anorexia, anxiety, and even chronic depression.

Most importantly, she had the willpower to get better, and she was determined. DelPlato’s parents made appointments with a local therapist, but she felt like her care provider was not equipped enough to treat the symptoms nor the cause.

Although the determined young lady found the courage to go back to college during the fall of the same year, she was on the constant hunt for “specialized” treatment and hit the jackpot with that treasure hunt! She visited the acclaimed Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and stated she has been much better since, in fact, DelPlato feels the best she has felt in a long time.

The girl also thanks her parents for always being her rock, strength, and support system. Honestly, that is the best you could do for your loved one in trauma—just be there for them.

Lauren Paulsen, Professor of Psychology and researcher, breaks down concerns of mental health care in rural areas under three main categories:

  • Accessibility
  • Availability
  • Acceptability

Due to these points and hitches in the system, general physicians sometimes attempt to have a very generalized perception and try their best to provide the best for every citizen. They have a lot on their plates, so, without a doubt, it is essential to consider raiding a mental health care provider for optimum care and try to go the extra mile to see a specialist.

Remember, they are called “specialists” for a reason!

There are several hotlines, non-profit care providing groups, and even apps on your devices with cognitive and occupational therapy. There are limitless possibilities and opportunities if only you would look for it!

Get yourself a support system, regular sessions with your therapist, a trustworthy circle, hobbies that make you feel good inside, and make the right guesswork when you are looking for a therapist. All is well, and you are fine, keep believing!
