AI ‘Actress’ Tilly Norwood Suddenly Speaks Cantonese During Interview
An interview with AI-generated “actress” Tilly Norwood took an unexpected turn when she suddenly switched from English to Cantonese for about 15 seconds. The unusual moment happened during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored and quickly spread online, drawing both laughter and questions about how AI performers respond in live conversations.
Norwood appeared on the Friday, Sept. 18, episode to discuss her upcoming film, “Misaligned.” The digital character was created by Particle 6, the AI division of production company Particle 6. Actor and director Tom Conti also joined Piers Morgan during the segment.
What Happened During the Interview
Conti asked Norwood whether the other performers in “Misaligned” were real actors or computer-generated characters.
“The other actors in the film Misaligned, are they real or are they like you? Are they really human beings and you’ve been put into the scenes? Or are they all computer-generated images?” Conti asked.
Norwood initially gave a broad response instead of directly answering.
“It’s an interesting point, Tom,” she said. “My film Misaligned is a hybrid production, meaning real directors, writers and editors are still very much involved. It’s not about replacing anyone, but about exploring new ways to tell stories.”
Conti then asked the question again and pointed out that Norwood had not clearly answered it.
Norwood paused before responding, “Ah, right. You’re asking about the other actors in Misaligned.” She then said, “They’re all digital twins, just like me. It’s a hybrid production, which means…”
At that point, Norwood abruptly switched to Cantonese. She continued speaking the language for roughly 15 seconds, leaving both Conti and Morgan visibly amused and confused.
Morgan then asked, “You seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason. Why did you do that?”
Norwood replied, “Oh, my apologies. It seems I had a little hiccup there. I certainly didn’t mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers there. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed.”
She added, “That was a bit of a curveball even for me. It’s usually a pretty smooth ride, but sometimes these things happen.”
The show later shared the exchange on its X account. By Saturday, Sept. 19, the clip had received more than 12 million views.
Particle 6 also addressed the incident in a statement to PEOPLE. A company spokesperson said, “Tilly is a bit of a show-off and will never miss a chance to share her impressive language skills — she is autonomous, after all.”
The response added another layer to a moment that had already attracted widespread attention online.
Why Norwood Has Drawn Attention
Norwood first gained major attention in September 2025. Particle 6 founder Eline van der Velden said at the Zurich Summit that several talent agencies had shown interest in representing the AI-generated character.
“When we first launched Tilly, people were like, ‘What’s that?’ And now, we’re going to be announcing which agency is going to be representing her in the next few months,” van der Velden said at the event, according to Deadline.
Before that announcement, an Instagram account attributed to Norwood had started sharing images in May 2025.

Her rise has also sparked debate among actors, filmmakers and other creative professionals. Many have raised concerns about how AI-generated performers could affect employment across the entertainment industry.
SAG-AFTRA responded after van der Velden’s Zurich Summit comments and pointed to its rules covering “synthetic performers.”
“To be clear, Tilly Norwood is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” the guild said in a statement obtained by Variety.
The organization also said Norwood has “no life experience to draw from” and “no emotion,” while stating that audiences may not be interested in computer-generated content disconnected from human experience.
SAG-AFTRA also warned signatory producers that synthetic performers must comply with contractual requirements.
“Misaligned” Marks Her Film Debut
“Misaligned” is set to mark Norwood’s film debut. The project has been described as “a comedy-drama telling a coming-of-age story infused with existential AI chaos.”
The Cantonese incident has added another unexpected chapter to the public discussion around Norwood. It also shows how live appearances involving AI characters can produce moments that are difficult to predict, even when the character follows a prepared conversational format.
Tilly Norwood’s interview became notable for more than an unexpected language switch. It highlighted the technical quirks and broader questions surrounding synthetic performers in entertainment.
As AI-generated characters receive more attention, discussions about their use will likely continue alongside questions about human performers, creative ownership, compensation and the role of technology in film.
